2017 Nissan GT-R gets quick pre-NYIAS tease

The 2017 Nissan GT-R will be one of the many vehicles that will be shown off at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, which kicks off Friday at the Javits Center in Manhattan. And with that event only a few days away, Nissan jumped the gun over the weekend, giving potential car buyers a quick glimpse of the 2017 GT-R’s rear end.

With a price tag of $101,770, the current 2016 Nissan GT-R doesn’t come cheap. It’s a high-performance supercar that has, since the 2009 model year, been an individual model, as opposed to being part of the Skyline series as the GT-R previously was. However, many reviewers have commented about the GT-R looking a bit stale due to the length of time since the current-generation model was unveiled. Nissan hopes to change that with the new GT-R, though the next-generation “R36” model may only be launched between 2018 and 2020.

The teaser photo posted by Nissan only shows us the 2017 GT-R’s rear view, and it looks like the quad-round taillights of the current “R35” generation are still present. The teaser doesn’t offer too many other clues aside from the taillight design remaining similar, but reports have claimed that Nissan would be making changes to the car’s front fascia design, as well as its aerodynamics.

Talking about the car’s engine, Nissan has always ticked horsepower and torque ratings upwards as long as the “R35” GT-R has been around. That may again be the case with the 2017 model. The current model has a 3.8-liter V6 twin-turbocharged engine that makes 545 horsepower, so it would be safe to expect a figure of around 550 to 560 for the 2017 GT-R. When the current-gen GT-R debuted for the 2009 model year, its engine displacement was the same, and that twin-turbo “only” made 480 horsepower.

All in all, it looks like Nissan won’t be making too many changes to the GT-R for the 2017 model year, but it was nice to see it teased in advance of the New York Auto Show.
