New BlackBerry 10 Handsets Pass through FCC Certification

It may be only a matter of time before the first generation of BlackBerry 10 handsets is formally released. While Research in Motion will be launching BlackBerry 10, the platform, on January 30, the devices’ actual release is believed by most to come shortly thereafter.

In the meantime, two unnamed BlackBerry 10-powered phones have reportedly passed through the FCC. These phones may be the unannounced “X10” and “Z10”, but then again, these may be two different devices altogether; who knows, RIM may actually be planning to release four BlackBerry 10 phones with the new OS.

The aforementioned Z10 and X10 have been leaked several times in previous weeks, with most of the purported photos giving observers a glimpse at the possible external features of both handsets. The Z10 is the phone once dubbed the L-Series, an all-touch device that may be the start of a new direction for RIM, a company best known for its BlackBerry handsets with physical keyboards.

Specs-wise, it is believe that the Z10 will be the flagship of RIM’s 2013 lineup. The X10, previously called the N-Series, resembles the BlackBerry Bold 9900, and comes with a much smaller screen (3.5 inches with 720 x 720 resolution) and the physical QWERTY keyboard long-time BlackBerry users are more familiar with.

Unfortunately, the FCC listings did not provide any rumored specs for the two mystery devices. They did, however, confirm a previous report that one of RIM’s new BlackBerry 10 phones will run on AT&T networks. Again, one of the phones sighted could be the same as the Z10, but without any images or proof thereof, it’s still hard to say at this point.
